Taking care of ourselves is a full-time job. What to eat, what not to eat, what to do etc…

So much researches and so many doctors giving their opinions about literally everything can easily confuse the public.

The desire to be healthy is a trend that will never go out of style.

Definition of Health

What is health exactly?

The view of health we have today looks more like a lifestyle than a body state.

Our understanding of health has changed a lot in the past decades.

In the first half of the 20th century, health was associated to a state of being free from illness or injury only.

In 1948, the definition of health was changed to; a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. According to more importance to the well being.

In our modern world, people agree that there are 3 definitions possible for health.

The first refers to our older belief system and simply define health as an absence of disease or impairment.

The second definition refers to a state which allows individuals to appropriately cope with all demands daily life requires and implies the absence of disease and impairment.

The third and last definition of health specifies a state of balance and serenity, that we as individuals can establish within ourselves, and between us and our social and physical environment.

This last definition is getting closer to a lifestyle, as I mentioned earlier, and take our well being into consideration on a larger scale.

What affects health

Some people like to think of being healthy as the best version possible of themselves.

Health is not a given and it can be influenced by a lot of exterior factors like; where a person lives, his/her genetics background, his/her income, education level and so on.

Fortunately, we have control over most of these factors.

Maintaining our health can be very challenging in the reality we live in today. We have access to a remarkable number of things to make our life easier, which makes us lazier and less proactive.

On the other side, we also have access to a ridiculous amount of information we can inspire ourselves from to achieves our goals.

Most of us already know what to do to be healthy, the matter is to be able to push ourselves to do it.

Types of health

Consequently, to all I have mentioned already, there is more than one type of health, like emotional health, financial health, spiritual health, etc…

Although, the two most discussed kinds of health are the following; Mental health and physical health.

The definition of mental health is a person's condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.

The state of our mental health has an influence on how we think, feel and act. It can influence the way we manage stress too.

Mental health is a struggle everybody has to face. Throughout our lives, we have to cope with all kinds of challenges which will have impacts on our mental health.

There are typical steps everyone must endure like childhood, puberty, adulthood and eventually death, but so many other events can take place, and challenge us mentally as well.

Having a healthy way to deal with these situations or to have the reflex to get help when needed can result in wonderful things like reaching our full potential, have the capacity to confront stress, work more proactively and make meaningful contributions in other's lives.

The best ways to keep your mind at ease are to connect with others, keep positive energy, stay physically active, help others, get enough sleep or again, get professional help.

Physical health is a concept we are a little bit more familiar with. It refers to the well-being and state of our bodies.

Good physical health will reduce the risk of injuries and health issues. A healthy body will also be able to work at "peak-performance".

The best way to have good physical health is to exercise regularly, have balanced nutrition and a good amount of sleep.

Having good hygiene or avoiding the use of tobacco alcohol and illegal drugs is also a good way to keep your self in good shape.

In the end, health is the concept of an organism functioning at its best. As humans, our best bet to keep our body and mind healthy is to adopt an active lifestyle in which we introduce good nutrition and good coping mechanisms. It should be a 2020 resolution for all of us.

The best way to ensure the proper functioning of our bodies is by taking care of it daily. Further the earlier we start the longer we will feel the benefits of health.
